Green Limkokwing Library

Nowadays, earth is facing a enviromental crisis. Human hands have changed this condition, causing destruction in all aspects of life. Human technologies make everything more efficient but the man himself did not think about the survival of the future generation. As inhabitant of the earth, it is our obligation to save the planet where we live. Not just for the current generation but for the future generation as well. So we take the first step with making our university library going green.

1.Problem statement

Library is one of the place that require a lot of electricity in Limkokwing University of Creative Technologies. The problem lies in the computers and copy machine in there. It needs a lot of electrical energy to operate 60 computers at once. Copy machine is need bigger electrical energy than one computer and there is two of them in the library.

Another problem is about the older books and magazine. It is unnecessary to keep too old books and magazine. Especially the ones oriented towards technology. Nowadays technology advancing with amazing speed. The books older than 6 years old can't keep up with the current information.

2.Problem solution

We think the computers in library can be replaced with more enviromental friendly computers. With low energy usage but the same performance as the current one. And we can cut down the number of computers in library. From what we see, students prefer bring their laptop to the library. Maybe because it is more convenient.

The same solution as computers, we think copy machine in library can be replaced with more enviromental copy machine with the same performance. But don't need to cut down the number of the current copy machine. Four of it will be enough to complement the needs of students.

As for the old books and magazines that still poper to use. We can transfer the content to electronical paper. with this, we don't need to use tree based paper. But we think this solution isn't good enough to be implanted now. It is because electronical paper is cost a lot more than the ordinary one. The current E-book service in library is good enough for now.

Another solution is we can recycle it. "There are numerous companies who recycle books.Book Destruction, a Grossman Group company, recycles whole books. They grind the books down and process them by repulping the paper to make new paper. Green Earth Book Recyclers works with Book Destruction to collect used textbooks from college students for recycling."

For the too old books and magazine, we think donating it will be wiser. There are person or group of people who love to collect old books. rather than being unused, in our opinion this solution is the right choice.

At last but not least is to make the library have a connection with some green organitations. We suggest to make connection with these organizations :

  • Care2: Care2 is a social network that organizes people who want to make a difference by living green.
  • TreeHugger: Learn about the latest trends in green design, food, fashion, building, travel and technology.
  • EnergyStar: Learn about environmentally safe electronics, lighting solutions, heating and cooling resources, and more.

3.Objective

Our objective is too make limkokwing university library more enviromental friendly. We hope our earth will become better place just a little bit with our solutions. To achieve something big, we started from one small step.

5.Technologies to be implemented

For the computers we need

Windows® System 7 OS

- Intel Pentium 4 1.3 GHz or AMD Athlon XP 1500+
- 1 GB or more of RAM
- NVIDIA® GeForce® FX or ATI Radeon™ 9500
- 25.0 GB available HD space
- 4X DVD-ROM drive
- Broadband Internet connection
- Keyboard/mouse

With this specification we can save more electrical energy For 20 computers we need at least 5000 watt

We think the current copy machine in limkokwing library is already meet the requirment for green library. The ricoh aficio MP 6000 is labelled by energy star. The standard copy machine at least need 200V++ to oparate. But ricoh aficio MP 6000 just need 120V with great performance.

This is the comparison beetwen ricoh aficio MP 6000 and Fuji xerox CM505
